Throughout the day, IVA educators and guest presenters shared their expertise on topics ranging from functional vocal technique and vocal tract resonance to contemporary musical theatre, group teaching, studio development, and helping singers become more independent learners.

Whether you attended the Intensive in person or are experiencing it for the first time, these recordings give you the opportunity to revisit the material, learn from each presenter, and take the time you need to put new ideas into practice.

Meet the Presenters

The Intensive featured a diverse group of experienced voice teachers, vocal coaches, performers, and educators, each bringing their own perspective and expertise to the conversation.

John Henny

Topic: Advanced Vowel Tuning: How to understand and adjust vocal tract resonances for enhanced balance, range, tone, and power

John has been a leading voice teacher for over 25 years. He has taught thousands of singers, including Grammy winners and top background and session singers. John’s students have appeared on Broadway and in major touring companies. John has also trained hundreds of voice teachers, including many industry leaders. John hosts the popular podcast, The Intelligent Vocalist, and his YouTube channel has over 10 million views and counting. His books, including Beginning Singing are Amazon bestsellers. John has lectured at USC, The Paul McCartney Liverpool Institute and the Learning Annex. John is known for making complex concepts simple and easy to understand and is a leader in creating online programs for singers and voice teachers.

Brian Manternach

Topic: Talk Less, Smile More: Adjusting Feedback in the Voice Studio

Brian Manternach, DM (he/him), is an associate professor in the University of Utah Department of Theatre and a research associate for the Utah Center for Vocology, where he is on the faculty of the Summer Vocology Institute. Honors include the 2025 University of Utah Distinguished Teaching Award, 2024 Cal-Western NATS Teacher of the Year Award, 2024 Clifton Ware Group-Voice Pedagogy Award, the 2021 Faculty Excellence in Research Award from the University of Utah College of Fine Arts, and the 2016 NATS Voice Pedagogy Award. He serves as an associate editor of the Journal of Singing, is a regular contributor to Classical Singer, and has been published in a variety of additional voice-related journals. He is also the author of Voices of Influence: Exploring the Journey of a Teacher and Student in the Voice Studio (Bloomsbury 2025), which is part of the NATS Books Program.

Maurie Tarbox

Topic: When the Rules Change: Training Contemporary Musical Theatre Styles

Maurie Tarbox is the Artistic Director for Ogden Musical Theatre and an experienced voice educator and performer specializing in both classical and contemporary styles. She holds a degree in Vocal Performance from Weber State University and is certified in Contemporary Commercial Music through Shenandoah University. Maurie has performed extensively across the U.S., including with artists such as Tanya Tucker, Chubby Checker, and Barry Manilow, as well as in leading roles throughout Utah’s theatre community. She has also served on the adjunct faculty at Weber State University, teaching in both the Musical Theatre and Vocal departments. Her extensive performance and teaching experience informs her practical approach to helping singers develop healthy, versatile, and expressive voices that meet the demands of real world performance.

Maddie Tarbox

Topic: When the Rules Change: Training Contemporary Musical Theatre Styles

Maddie is an evidence-based voice specialist born and raised in Northern Utah. She received her MM in Voice Pedagogy – Commercial Contemporary Track from Shenandoah University, her MFA in Acting from the University of Central Florida and her BAs in Musical Theatre from Weber State University in Utah.

Sarah Bishop

Topic: Pitchin Musician | How to Run Group Lessons

Sarah Bishop is a teacher and performer based in Pittsburgh and New York City. Her professional credits include Roundabout Theatre Company’s Tony Award winning production of Cabaret, the world premiere of The Griswolds’ Broadway Vacation at The 5th Avenue Theatre, and Tick, Tick… Boom! at Pittsburgh CLO. Sarah joined IVA in 2021 and specializes in helping singers develop pitch awareness and confidence, particularly those who struggle with singing in tune. She is the founder and creator of Pitch Please, an online ear training course for singers. A graduate of the University of Cincinnati College Conservatory of Music, Sarah also specializes in Musical Theatre repertoire and enjoys working with singers across genres, including pop, rock, folk, and musical theatre.

Chelsea Cowan

Topic: Beyond Private Lessons: Building a Modern Vocal Studio

Chelsea Cowan is an international vocal coach, educator, and performance specialist with over a decade of experience working with singers around the world. She currently serves as Lead Vocal Coach at Wolf Studios NYC and runs SingingWithChelsea Vocal Studio. An Advanced Instructor certified through the Institute for Vocal Advancement (IVA), Chelsea works with developing and professional artists across pop, rock, R&B, country, musical theatre, and crossover styles. Her coaching combines functional, science-informed vocal technique with artistic freedom, specializing in mix and belt coordination, range development, agility, stylistic refinement, and sustainable vocal strength. Chelsea is passionate about helping singers understand their voices, build confidence, and develop the technical skills needed for long-term vocal health and performance.

Charlene Adams

Topic: What Your Singer Believes Is Affecting What You Hear

Char Adams has been a professional singer and actor for the past 30 years, performing in both professional and community productions throughout the Pacific Northwest region of the United States. She has collaborated with professional music directors and voice teachers and is a Certified IVA Mentor Instructor through the Institute for Vocal Advancement (IVA). In 2021, Char was invited to become an IVA Ambassador, joining the team to instruct other teachers and share her passion for learning and teaching vocal truth. She continues to study vocal and acting performance and actively participates in her community to help her students and clients achieve their goals. Those who have worked with her praise her professionalism, patience, and ability to connect with her students on a personal level. Char’s dedication to her craft and her passion for teaching make her an invaluable asset to the vocal community.

Tom Bathgate

Topic: How IVA Teaches: A Functional Technique-based Approach to Singing

Tom Bathgate has spent the last 16 years helping singers discover their voices and realize their full potential. As an Advanced Level IVA Instructor and one of the eight founding members of IVA, Tom combines his passion for teaching with his role as the organization’s Chief Executive Officer. Leading IVA, he’s on a mission to spread the joy of singing through high-quality education and a thriving global community of voice teachers.
